Re: Tru64 UNIX/HP-UX interoperability and migration
Wow! Very well thought out and expressed, thank you for posting this.
As a current HP admin with a couple of years of Tru64 experience, I have a few things to offer:
- The used of the /etc/printcap for printer setup and maintenance is much more straightforward, IMO, than the System V method used on HP. I would love to see that sort of functionality introduced into HP-UX.
- tools like syscheck were helpful, but glance seems to be much better, and would be nice to have a corresponding Tru64 version of it, I would think.
- I very much like swintall and the related sw* utilities for doing patch management on HP. The integration of swinstall with SAM makes it that much better. The last release of Tru64 I used did not have a GUI other than CDE, and this I understand has changed, so this may be less of an issue.
- The Tru64 "adduser" front-end to "useradd" was very helpful.
- I cannot wait for TruCluster to be available for HP-UX!
again, thanks for posting, looking forward to the other replys.

Re: Tru64 UNIX/HP-UX interoperability and migration
Having to wait up to 45 minutes for my ServiceGuard failover to finish before I can patch my production server is very annoying. I can't wait for Trucluster to be part of HPUX!
This would give HPUX an advantage over AIX HACMP, which can also have long failover times.

Re: Tru64 UNIX/HP-UX interoperability and migration
I am one of those who has been an SA in both worlds.
The best features of TruUNIX are the clustering and the remote printing based upon the BSD spooler.
HP generally beats DEC/Compaq in the areas of patch installation and software management. All in all, SAM is a very good tool. I also prefer HP's ability to better handle swap (e.g. pseudoswap).
The main features I would like to see incorporated into HP-UX are clustering and a big improvement in what in HP-UX is referred to as 'remote printing' as opposed to 'Network printing'. The Network printing works fine but there are times when I would really like to be able to use a filter like BSD does in remote printing.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
