unable to bind address: trying next port
i get this error when i try to start a process.
is there a way to clear out the ports and start over??
i have tried restarting inetd, tried inetd -c

its a tracking server/process for an oracle db. I dont know too much about it:(

to me the message implies that the app is trying to bind() to a specific local port number, but that port number is still in use. it then recovers by trying the next port number in its list. port numbers are "addresses" at the TCP and UDP level.
there could be an old instance of the app still running, or the old instance's connection could still be in TIME_WAIT or some other state.
if you can get the app to spit-out the port numbers, you can look for them in the output of netstat -an. you can look for old instances of the app in ps -ef.
