Unable to boot in single user mode...

Hi All -
We had a power outage over the weekend & my K370 server took a pretty hard hit. It looks as though a specific startup daemon is not wanting to start up at boot & is hanging the system upon boot.

To investigate, I'm trying to boot into single user mode & when I hit a key (I've hit esc, random letter, enter & spacebar) when it tells me to 'press any key to interrupt boot process' & it still automatically boots. Keyboard works fine, I tried it on another system. Anyone ever had this type of issue & how did you get around it? Thanks a ton

Re: Unable to boot in single user mode...

Have you tried just the kbd or the whole console on another system? Could be that the kbd is fine but the consoels connection to the kbd took a hit? Just a thought...

Re: Unable to boot in single user mode...

haven't heard of the problem, but one way to get into single user mode is to change the boot command in the AUTO file on the boot disk, assuming you can log into the system after it boots.

makeboot -a "hpux -is" /dev/rdsk/cxtxdx

don't forget to to put it back to "hpux" after you diagnose your problem.

Re: Unable to boot in single user mode...

it's "mkboot -a ...", but first try to test your console on another system or another console. Another way is to set the default run-level to 1 in /etc/inittab. But perhaps the power outage destroyed something in your system, e.g. the core IO board.

Hope this helps!

Re: Unable to boot in single user mode...

Hi Belynda,

I had somethng like that with the console of a L3000.
What a HP engineer did was power of the console and then power on the console when holding down d then the console will take the fabric values.
After this you must beable to interrupt with a key stroke.

Re: Unable to boot in single user mode...

Thanks for all your suggestions. Yes, I did try a whole different console with the same results. I also tried the 'D' reset suggestion, with no success. HP tech came in this morning & replaced the console i/o internal card, console working now, but my server no longer knows who's kid it is.. If I go into SAM to tell it who it is, it basically says it's a duplicate entry, since it already sees it's name & ip address.. UGH! I'll start a new thread under a better subject. Thanks again for all your help. Points will come as soon as the site will allow me to get to them.. :o)
