Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Well, i'm using hp-ux 9.05 with an apollo 735.
I want to connect two stations do do tests, but I'm unable to bring up the lan card.
What ever I tried, its status stays DOWN.
ifconfig send me an error (like can't find the interface ) when I try to set it up, but I can set the Ip adress without any problem.
netstat -in show me the interface too, and tells me that it'a down !
I tried all I knew, but nothing worked ... so help !

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

What does a lanscan show you? How are you setting up your lan card, could you give us the command line you are using? A little more technical info would go a long way.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Dominique,

How are you trying to connect the two stations together?. If you are using a hub/switch, check the cable connections. If you are using a cable between them, it should be a cross-over.

And try resetting the LAN card using lanadmin.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

well ...

lanscan show me:
path: 2.0.2
adress: 0x08000949B9E0
lu: 0
State DOWN
Name unit: lan0
State: down
Id: 4
Methods Ether
Mjr Num:52

To setup my lan card I type:
ifconfig lan0 up then I have: no such interface !
But when I type: ifconfig lan0 10.18.12.1 it fonctions very well !
netstat -ni give me:
lan0* 1500 10 10.18.12.1 ...etc
then it shows me that the interface is down ... but I'm unable to rise it up !

And lanadmin is not usable under HPUX 9.05 ... I don't have it !

I'm connecting two stations via the "Thin Lan" interface thanks to a coax ! I have the same problem on both stations !

Thanks for your help.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Verify your network connections. A LAN card will refuse to come up if the physical connections are not correct. Try replacing terminators, cables or transceivers if you are using them. You could also connect a T connector with terminators on each side and no cable. This would bring it to its simplest state. If it does come up with 2 terminators and no cables attached, one of your cables is bad. If it does not come up with only terminators connected, try another terminator, or could be problem with NIC. If you are using transceivers to connect to ws, try replacing those as well.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

One last check: the 735 is pretty old and back in the old days, there were models that had a BNC connector plus a port for an AUI connection. Like the really old 400 series, early 700's have a jumper block to select which port to use. If this box has not been recently connected to a network, perhaps the wrong port has been selected. You'll need to take the cover off to gain access to the jumper blocks.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

well, I tried to change cables, treminators ... but not thing works, it still down !
I'm not using any trancievers.

Bill, do you know where is the jumper blocks ? Because I've opened it and I don't see any ... I took of the card in which is connected the NIC, cleaned it but I did not see any jumpers !
Do you know if I can install the HP-UX 10.20 on a 735 ? And where I can find it ?
In fact I'm re-learning the Hp-Ux system, it's a small network (2 stations) that I made at home !

In any case thanks for your help.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Thin lan, that takes me back.

This requires a 50 ohm cable (not 75) and 50 ohm terminators.

If there are only 2 machines, there must be a T-connector hooked to each machine.

On one end of each T-connector is the terminator, the other ends are connected with the thin-lan coax.

Until this happens, you will not be able to bring up the lan port.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Well, I'm using a T connector pluged on each NIC with on one side a terminator (50 ohms) and on the other side there's the coax ! So .... it should work ... but still doesn't ! I really don't know where I made a mistake ! The hardware still doesn't want to bring up !

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Dominique,

It's been quite long since I used 9.05. I guess it is the landiag command than lanadmin. I think you may have change a jumper by opening the cover of 735 to set it to BNC. Or try connecting a AUI->BNC converter to the AUI interface and see if you can see the power LED on. If so, you may have to change the jumper.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

thanks Sridhar, it's landiag, you're right !
Now I have one card up thanks to a reset, but the other still don't want ! I'm affraid it's an hardware problem onthe NIC !
Thanks a lot for four help.

Re: Unable to bring up the lan0 interface ..

Dominique,

In my past life, I worked on quite a number of workstations but not now. But I waguely remember that I was changing the jumper to switch between BNC and AUI. Have you tried using the AUI-BNC converter?.
