unable to copy file to directory
Hi all
Recently I installed Oracle8i onto my HP-UX machine. Somehow one particular file was not installed properly. Oracle sent me the correct file which is libn8.a (an archive file). I tried to ftp it directly into the required directory(/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/lib) as the root user. This produced an error despite that directory having 'Others Write' privileges.
So I ftp-ed to the root directory, changed the owner of the file and tried to 'cp libn8.a /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/lib' as oracle user. This error appeared'cp: bad copy to /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/liblibn8.a : write: No such device or address.
Any ideas? Appreciate the time :)

Re: unable to copy file to directory
Do an ll of the file you want to replace first.
It could be a symbolic link.
I find that Rm -f will always work to remove a file after whilch there should be no problem replacing it.
I recomment copying the replacement file first.
And make sure that you don't run into permission problems by making sure you do a
chown and chmod to appropriate values after.

Bill

It works for me (tm)

Re: unable to copy file to directory
Could somebody have set up an alias to cp?
Check with 'whence cp'. Try:
/usr/bin/cp -p libn8.a /u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/lib
Regards,
John
