Unable to startup the vncserver.

Hi Friends,

I need your help. but on Solaris8.
I am unable to startup the vncserver.
I checked all the setup.
I am starting up in this way:
$vncserver :4 -depth 24

The log file says:
XSERVTransSocketCreateListener: failed to bind listener
_XSERVTransSocketUNIXCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed
_XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: failed to create listener for local

Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets
xrdb: Interrupted system call
xrdb: Can't open display 'keppelora:4'
xsetroot: unable to open display 'keppelora:4'
twm: unable to open display "keppelora:4"
xterm Xt error: Can't open display: keppelora:4

But the display is ok.
perl path is ok
vncclass is set in classpath.

the xstartup file in /home dir says:
#!/bin/sh

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
twm &

What could be the problem?

please ...
Thanks in Adv

Syed

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

can you also try:

vncserver :11 -geometry 1024x768

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

Thanks, Yogeraj,

I tried:

vncserver :11 -geometry 1024x768

New 'X' desktop is keppelora:11

Starting applications specified in /home/oraprod/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/oraprod/.vnc/keppelora:11.log

But still the log file gives the same error as mentioned before.

Regards
Syed

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

sounds like there's problems wrt creating the appropriate sockets ....

ps -ef | grep vnc ?

permissions on /var/spool/sockets/X11 ?

Or check
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q13

looks familiar ?

Do export DISPLAY=... first, then vncserver...

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

Hi Friends,

Now I am getting the following error,
xrdb: No such file or directory
xrdb: can't open file '/home/oraprod/.Xresources'

But I checked xrdb is in
/usr/openwin/bin/xrdb path

So why it could be giving the above error. And ".Xresource" file is not exising in '/home/oraprod/
I checked another machine where vnc is running successfully and I didn't find any above error and ".Xresource".

Please ....

Syed

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

hi,

From my notes:

When you install the software it will prompt you for a password. You can store this in a password file if you like, and then set
vncviewer*passwordFile: /home/wherever/password
in your .Xresources file.

NB. in my case i did not have to create the .Xresources file, it worked!

Can you try this?

Hope this helps!

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

Thanks lot Yogeeraj,

But what should be the entries in .Xresource file.

As I told earlier, in our another server, vnc is running ok with .Xresource file.

If at all we require .Xresource then what are entries should it have?

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

Sorry, I made a mistake in my above message,

-Actually vnc is running in other box without .Xresource file.

Solution

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

hi,

I think you should put the following line in it!
============================================================
vncviewer*passwordFile: /home/wherever/password

============================================================

You may also wish to consult the following page for an example:
http://www.jjj.de/x11/.Xresources

or from my notes:

The .Xresources and .Xdefaults files
These two files are essentially the same thing, except that .Xresources is used at normally when the window manager starts up for the first time, while .Xdefaults is used at any time. We will assume that you do not have a .Xresources file in your LINUX home directory.

The .Xdefaults file allows you to customise your xterm and other windows. If such a file exists, it overwrites whatever options are set in the actual command line. Here is an example:

XTerm*Background: linen
XTerm*Foreground: black
XTerm*font: 9x15
XTerm*saveLines: 1000
XTerm*HiForeColor: white
XTerm*HiBackColor: #c06077
XTerm*geometry: +50+100
Although the default xterm might have quite different settings, it will be created with the settings specified above. Most of the terms are self explanatory, but full details may be obtained by consulting the xterm man page.

Hope this helps!

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

if you look at $HOME/.nvc/startup you can see the script sources $HOME/.Xresources.

As said before .Xresources is an equivalent to .Xdefaults ... I'd suggest just touching $HOME/.Xresources and attempt to start vnc again ... also see http://www.realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/1998-December/003937.html looks like this maybe a feature of vnc installs on Solaris ?

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

HI Alex,Yogeeraj,Andrej

Please Accept My 'T H A N K S'
from the bottom of my heart.

Absolutely great...

Alex your guess of creating empty file, did work.

Just because of 'X-Window' I was unable to launch Oracle-Installer, hence no work. Now happy.

But still, I need your help...

I started vnc using Oracle A/C, as I said it is perfect.

Next I stared vnc using APPS a/c (to connect to same server), it started the Vxnc process, and the log file is ok, But I am unable to connect. When I am trying to connect vnc, this time running on port 5806 using browser:
http://domain:5806 after trying to connect for some time it is coming out saying "The page cannot be displayed"

The server I am trying to connect is behind "FIREWALL",

As I mentioned earlier, I am able to connect using
http://samedomain:5804

-- Could it be the problem with port on firewall?

--- Or something else ?
Note:

I created the empty .Xresources file in both the a/c's.

So please ....

Thanks & Regards
Syed

Re: Unable to startup the vncserver.

I'd suggest it probably is the firewall since it works elsewhere : best info I could find was : http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/faq.html#q52
which suggests this is possible with a bit of tinkering but maybe dependant on the firewall/router config and make.

so my advise would be use :

http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/search.html

and keyword "firewall" to view the numerous discussions on this ... if you still are unable to find a resolution why not use the vnc newsgroup / message board and post your issue there ?
