Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

I installed a general release patch bundle to my HP-UX 11.0 box a couple of weeks ago along with some patches to enable java1.3 to run on the machine and ever since then I have been unable to telnet to the machine. As soon as I try to telnet to the machine it tells me the connection has been lost. Does anyone know why this is happening? I could telnet to the machine fine before the patches were installed but since then I have been unable to telnet to the machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

Chris,
What you didn't tell us whether remsh(rsh), rexec, rlogin, and/or FTP are also failing. I'll take the assumption here that the telnet/telnetd patch PHNE_21822 is most likely the culprit. Review the PHNE_21822.text Special Instructions; most typically if you have the requisite mksf(1m) patch, you only need to run insf -d tels to create the devices files, and that should resolve it on the next attempted connection.
Hope this helps,

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

Well if you can ping the box ok...and your nslookup for name and IP works ok, then I'd rule out network issue.
Can anybody connect via telnet??? If yes then the problem may be you need to increase ntpy parms..if no then....
Generally the first thing I do when I see this is to rebuild my device files:
insf -e

Hope this helps,
/rcw

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

All that seems to be affected is telnet. I ran the insf -d tels and the insf -e commands and it did some things but I am not able to reboot the machine at this time. Will I have to reboot after these commands as telnet is still not working after I ran these commands.

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

I got this message that seems to be an error when running insf -d tels. Is this an error that I should be concerned about?

insf -d tels
insf: Unable to lock /etc/ioconfig - : Cannot open /etc/ioconfig with specified flags.
insf: Installing special files for pseudo driver tels

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

Chris,
The error message you reported doesn't show up very often and looking in the Knowledge database didn't really get us much more details to help you. So I figured lets get more data from you:
Which patch level of mskf/insf are you using might be relavent. The PHNE_21822 just says to put in PHCO_17090 or later; the current version is PHCO_21596.
It wasn't clear from your last response if, after installing the device files, if telnet works or not. What is the error message that you get if telnet fails? Is there an error logged by telnetd on the HP box did you try to telnet into?
One other item that might help is to
rm /dev/pts/* before running the insf.
Finally, is this a Trusted System? If so, there is a patch interdependency of the libsec patch, PHCO_17622.
I sure hope this helps resolve the issue,

Re: Unable to Telnet to HP11 Machine

OK. I have the mksf/insf patch PHCO_21596 installed on the system. No the telnet did not work after running the insf commands last time. I removed the /dev/pts/* files and reran the insf commands. This didn't seem to help. I don't really get an error message when telnetting to the machine it just tells me Connection to Host Lost as soon as I try to connect and will never let me on. Where would the log for the telnet be? No this is not a trusted system but that patch PHCO_17622 is on my system anyway. Any ideas?
