Neither of these options is giving me the machine ID on one of our HP-UX boxes.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Re: uname -i and/or getconf MACHINE_IDENT
I have to wonder if the machine identification number isn't one of those parameters that the HP Customer Engineer has to set and it was never done - maybe after a mother board replacement.

Re: uname -i and/or getconf MACHINE_IDENT
Quote from man confstr;
_CS_MACHINE_IDENT
Identifier for each physical machine. Returned as
an opaque string of printable ascii characters.
This string has the same value for all partitions
in a physical machine. For hardware classes first
released with HP-UX 11i or later, this ID is
unique across all hardware classes. For earlier
hardware classes, the ID number is unique only
within the hardware class. A null string is
returned if no ID number is available; this is
expected to be the case only for prototype
machines or other systems improperly configured in
manufacturing. Comparisons of this value must be
made using the string compare functions, see
string(3C).
If something is replaced (motherboard) then CE needs to change the Machine ID to match rest of system.

Solution
This almost always means that the processor or mother board has been replaced and the service technician did not set the machine ID number. This service (setting the ID number) is only available fromm authorized HP service people since this number controls software licensing. Call HP and they can fix it for you.
