Re: Unix&Oracle8i
Trying to get this information is a fool's errand because performance data is tainted by the marketing agenda of the tester.
I will give expereince.
1) Oracle 8i is obsolete and out of support. Oracle won't help you if you have trouble.
2) I've run 8.1.7.4 the last release of 8i succesfully on Linux and HP-UX. Properly patched, it was very stable.
3) Performance varied with disk and i/o setup. It was pretty rough with linux and ide drives, it was pretty good with storage in which data, redo and index was configured raid 1.

Re: Unix&Oracle8i
From 10G version, Oracle is developed on Linux, (before it was on Solaris), that is: Oracle 10G works best on Linux.

Re: Unix&Oracle8i
This 8i database software will not support the newest OS releases or OS functionality.
For making it run and maintaining the configuration, I think you are mostly on your own.
So, knowing that, I think you best look at the OS'es you have already in house and that you are familiar with, an OS where you have good support contacts that are willing to help you, and go for that. I would not try anything new or different that Ihave not yet done when I have to install such an old software.
My further experience is that a software that only runs with Oracle 8i, just means that it needs an Oracle 8i database *client* software, and that it easily runs with an Oracle 9i database. Did this multiple times myself. Maybe that is somehow a solution ?

Re: Unix&Oracle8i
It might be possible to run the application with a newer, supported version of Oracle. Oracle 10g can provide tablespace compatible with applications written for Oracle 8.1.7.4 There may be a few app's like that at my office.
A more direct attempt to answer your question.

Honestly, because 8i is so old, there isn't much out there on it.
