Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

We are using OpenSpool, an HP product, for our print management covering 120 network printers and an average of 1000 print users. OpenSpool will be gone fishing at the end of 2002 per HP (what's a bummer). We are looking for another print management software to replace OpenSpool. Can any body one out there shed the light on this subject? Thanks.

Here's one you can check out:
http://www.easyspooler.com/

Although I support many users and many printers with nothing more than lp, some perl, awk, a little c, and CGI code.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

You can use HP Jetdirect or HP web jetadmin. Both are good.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

I'd like to clarify that my question is not about LAN/PC printing. It's HP-UX servers print management software. I'd like to know if any of you have any experience in replacing "OpenSpool" product with another product. Thanks for recently information, but unfortunately I am still waiting for the right one.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

Your options for UNIX are EasySpooler that I listed above or Lpplus - http://www.gene-tek.com/english/product/printer05.htm

Both of these are printer management products.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

Ben - Two years ago I had this same issue and had to migrate off of OpenSpool.
We went with a product called Unispool by HollandHouse. It is very easy to set up and administer. Here is some info you can check out:
http://www.hollandhouse.com (NL)
http://www.apinet.com (US)

We have not yet upgraded to 6.0 but it sounds like configs can be done on the fly with no down time.

Good luck.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

So far I get two products (Easyspool and Unispool) that can replace OpenSpool. Are there any more? Thanks.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

Hi,I have exactly the same problem as you. I am looking for a replacement of OpenSpool. I recall that HP sent me an alternative a few years ago called "Dazel". Does anyone know about this product ? Is it worth it ? Does it replace OpenSpool with all the same functionnality ? Thanks.

Dazel is alive and well and now known as HP Output Server. See http://outputmanagement.hp.com/ for more details.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

Hi

We are currently migrating to a product from macr4 called UniQ

I suppose there are numerous products out there that will suffice, the issue you need to be certain of is the level of support you can get from your supplier. At the moment macro4 are pretty good.

Re: Unix-Banner Printing software replacing OpenSpool

Just going through what you are about to embark on.....converting Openspool.

We evaluated Unispool, EasySpooler and OMPlus (LPPlus).

In the end..we found both EasySpooler and OMPlus (LPPlus) to be very similar and both provided a base interface for converting those np command syntax to 'their' syntax. Both EasySpoooler & OMPlus are GOOD products.

We finally went with OMPlus.
I've converted 2 systems already...tested it and got it to work to our big remote Xerox printers. Was easy to set up...and their technical staff has done a nice job too.

Just my experience...
