Unix does shutdown

My G40 10.20 system did a shutdown -r following a message of
13:15 Wed Oct 03 2001. Reboot after panic: Data page fault
14:33 Fri Nov 16 2001. Reboot after panic: Data page fault
Is this a warning or error? Should I place a s/w (h/w) call or for what?
so let it be wriiten so let it be done

Re: Unix does shutdown

Bill,

You may need to do a Q4 analysis of the system and submit the information to HP. Mostly you may be having a bad patch. I would start with a software call. If it is not then HP is going to move it to Hardware anyway.

Here is how you would run Q4.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Most probable memory problem. Can be multiple reason. overload, bad memory, Programming bug i,e program has not dealloc memory etc..

If system boots up ok and you can still have all memory available your system is in good shape.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Bill, and you might want to check your patch level also. You should be looking into patching upto sept 2001.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Hi Bill,

First patch your box. This could be a problem which can be solved by a patch. Did you change something after which this happened ?.

Do a patch analysis and download and install the patch, if that doesn't work out, place a software call with hp, i guess.

Hope this helps.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Check all the known logs and crash files.

If you can go to gsp after logging in type ss
this will list the stat of our cpu, or type ps this will list the status of your fans, and power supplies. ( I am not sure if your machine has this? I never used your model of machine.)

I would also check /var/tombstones and see if the ts99 file is time stamped the same time of your reboot. If it is open a software call and have HP read the codes.

Re: Unix does shutdown

A data page fault is 99.9% of the time a software failure.
This could be for many reasons, as the DPF is just an indication that there has been an erro accessing a page of data. You need to get the panic dumpa analaysed to determine whether you have a need for a patch, or some other issue.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Bill,

When paging you are going to disk and if your disk drive hit a bump in the road (bad sector, cylinder, etc...) you will get this error. HP-UX is good about fixing these problems because it runs fsck every time the system is shutdown ungracefully. In your case, shutdown -r was performed. Do you know this for sure? Did HP-UX appear to be fixing the problem while rebooting? If not, you may want to manually run fsck and see if this fixes your problem.

Re: Unix does shutdown

Hi there.
If i were you, i would place both calls.
Sorry to all HP people, but if you pay support , use it as much as you can.
We had the same problem on a V2500 last week
and after a very caerful check the hardware guys decided to replace a memory stick.
