Unmirror /dev/VG00 prior to patching
I have a new 11.23 server that is not yet on the network. I've set up many volume groups and logical volumes to the SAN in preperation for an orcale database server.
What I would like to do is load the latest 11.23 patch bundle (which I downloaded from the ITRC and burned to DVD and loaded on the server).
As I can't make an Ignite image, nor back it up to tape, what I would like to do is split off the mirror disk of /dev/VG00, patch the server, and if it fails to boot, boot up on the alternate boot disk (which wasn't patched).
I don't know the exact commands to split off the mirror disk. Can someone please assist in this regard?
root@MPPMDBP1:/home/root> lvlnboot -v
Boot Definitions for Volume Group /dev/vg00:
Physical Volumes belonging in Root Volume Group:
/dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2 (0/0/0/3/0.6.0) -- Boot Disk - primarary
/dev/dsk/c3t5d0s2 (0/0/1/1/0/4/1.5.0) -- Boot Disk - secondary
Boot: lvol1 on: /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2
/dev/dsk/c3t5d0s2
Root: lvol3 on: /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2
/dev/dsk/c3t5d0s2
Swap: lvol2 on: /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2
/dev/dsk/c3t5d0s2
Dump: lvol2 on: /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s2, 0
root@MPPMDBP1:/home/root> vgdisplay -v /dev/vg00
... much skipped ....

Re: Unmirror /dev/VG00 prior to patching
Hi,
you can use lvsplit and lvextend commands for all lv's in vg00.
as example
lvsplit /dev/vg00/lvol1
lvextend -m 1 /dev/vg00/lvol1 /dev/dsk/c3t5d0s2
or after shtdown pulling out the disk may be a solution again.
Kenan.

Re: Unmirror /dev/VG00 prior to patching
IMHO the very best solution for your problem:
Dynamic Root Disk

http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11iv2.html#Dynamic%20Root%20Disk
Hope this helps!

Re: Unmirror /dev/VG00 prior to patching
Why do you split the mirroring
1. Check if you are able to boot from the alternate disk
2. Pull out the primary disk and check if you are able to boot from the alternate disk
3. If yes, the plug-in the primary disk, plug out the alternate disk and start the patching
>> This will have the alternate disk as your backup
>> Observe the server for a week for any issue or performance ..
>> Once done, shutdown, insert the alternate disk ..
