update-ux

Hi Gurus,

I am planning to upgrade my hpux 11.00(PA-RISC) to 11.23.
What I want to know is, which one will be better; fresh installation or using update-ux?

What will be the advantages of update-ux?

Thanks in advance..

Re: update-ux

Hi:

If you are moving from 11.0 to 11.23 you need to cold-install. You cannot jump directly from 11.0 to 11.23.

In general, a cold-installation is the cleanest, most guaranteed path forward. You have the ability to size your vg00 filesystems to best fit your needs without undue effort.

Re: update-ux

Yes, is best to forget about update-ux, when updating from 11.00 to anything, best a cold install.

Re: update-ux

I'm in the final stages of updating 6 servers from 11.11 to 11.31. They are all vPars and had to have that software upgraded also to make it a little more interesting. I have a test server to play with and tried update-ux on it. Interesting exercise but NOT something I would use in reality. I had multiple issues in each update-ux step (11.11 to 11.23) and (11.23 to 11.31) that I had to investigate/fix which extended the time. It would have been a long/interesting weekend running the pair of update-ux's on the servers. It was much quicker/cleaner to build a 11.31 server from scratch, and then customize it for each servers specifics.

Re: update-ux

Hi (again):

OK, so it's 11.11 to 11.23. I would *still* do a cold-install. It's so much cleaner and more guaranteed to work the first time!

All you need do is to create mapfiles for your non-vg00 volume groups with the '-s' option to collect the VGID in the mapfiles; and once your vg00 is ready, 'vgimport' the volume groups.

Re: update-ux

S. Rider's expriences are the same as what most encounter.

update-ux might just work, but more often something fails that either consumes all your time to resolve or your system is left unusable.

What ever way you choose ( cold install ;) make sure you have at least two Ignite images that have been tested.

Best of luck.
