Updating to 11i - need to preserve a copy on mirror
Hi all,
I am upgrading a number of N class server (don't ask) to 11i from 11.00. I am fortunate in that the data is basically static. I have basically installed 11i on a test N class copied all of the specific data from the production server and taken an ignite image. I intend to simply restore this image to the new server at the cutover time.
I have one issue. The Production server will not boot across the LAN from the boot prompt as its not on the same Subnet as the ignite server. I am aware if I do a bootsys at the IP level it will install a temporary kernel and neither of my root disks will be bootable back to the old 11.00 state. As they are N class servers I can't simply take a disk out prior to starting the work. Can anyone tell me how I can maintain a copy of the 11.00 image on one disk and install 11.11 on the other. I will obviously have an ignite image of the 11.00 environ anyway I just want to be extra sure.
Cheers

"As they are N class servers I can't simply take a disk out prior to starting the work"
Why not?
Shutdown the server, open the rear "door" and pull the disk out.
Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: Updating to 11i - need to preserve a copy on mirror
If you do take out a disk, the problem will arise if you plug it back in again and boot. The system might try to re-sync all the extents before you catch it, even in single user mode. Also you don't know which extents it would regard as current. You would have to boot into LVM maintenance mode hp-ux -lm to avoid that.
For this reason, I recommend that you keep your removed disk aside and immediately replace it with a blank disk, which you can vgcfgrestore and vgsync, plus everything else required for a root disk replacement.
How about a make_tape_recovery instead?

Re: Updating to 11i - need to preserve a copy on mirror
you have an ignte server - do a make net recovery of the server just before you upgrade - if something does go wrong you can run an ignite recovery to get back to the original system image
