Re: upgrade 11.0

Hi,

You have a big problem if you can't
take a backup of your data? Do you
have a second system that you can backup
your information?

An upgrade of 10.20 to 11 is fraught
with many problems including the sizes
of your existing operating system
filesystems / /stand /opt /usr

There are many postings about this
subject, but unless you can safely
backup your data, you should not
attempt this upgrade.

Re: upgrade 11.0

Since you do not have any backup device, it is just a matter of days (maybe hours?) before you'll have a catastrophic failure of you disks or someone logged in as root accidently removes every file on the computer--in other words, your machine on the edge of a complete disaster.

So don't even think about an upgrade--you've got much bigger problems to worry about. Get a tape drive or use another HP-UX machine to make a copy of your system-without-a-tape using both Ignite/UX as well as fbackup.

Re: upgrade 11.0

You want to upgrade to 11.00 but want to keep some of the old 10.20 executables? I would strongly advise against this.
1 - You will be running 10.20 binaries on 11.00. This is not a problem as such, just bad practice.
2 - The software you want to keep will probably ceace to be under any support if you do this.
3 - The software you have will probably be available as a compiled & "optimised" 11.00 version.

However, there is an "way out". UPGRADE your system but do not do as HP reccomend and delete the swinstall database (I think it is /var/spool/sw/, it is in the manual if you want to check).

This will be fraught with risk as:
o You will have an swinstall database with both 10.20 & 11.00 binaries. i.e. it may look like you have two versions of the same thing.
o The upgrade has no backout as you have no mirror disk or tape device to get a backup. If you do this & it goes wrong you will have no system.

My guess is that this machine is not "business critical" and as such you may feel that the risk is worth taking. But do think long and hard who uses the computer, you may be surprised. I would, as a minimum, back the machine up with IgniteUX & fbackup/tar/pax or whatever you favorite tool is.

Re: upgrade 11.0

Do not attempt the upgrade without a backup!!! During my upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 my system disk became unbootable. I had to restore my system from backup. Without a backup I would have lost everything!
