Upgrade file systems from version 3 to 4 - using vxupgrade
Is it safe to run vxupgrade command on a busy system? I found the following from HP support. Has anyone run this program while the database/application is still running?
The vxupgrade command can upgrade an existing Version 3 VxFS file system to the Version 4
layout while the file system remains online.
However there is also some risk involved and it would probably be best to do this after a backup is taken.
Thanks,
Amy

Re: Upgrade file systems from version 3 to 4 - using vxupgrade
Hi Amy:
The actual upgrade take only a few seconds. The manpages for 'vxupgrade(1M)' describe what happens and the caveats of doing a version change. See the notes in the manpages!
As with anything, if you want absolute safety, backup your filesystem beforehand.

Re: Upgrade file systems from version 3 to 4 - using vxupgrade
Shalom Amy,
HP says it is safe. I've done it in HP's labs a few times on busy systems and there was no negative impact
I would never do it on a production system, only after setting a maintenance window and having a backup of the filesystem to be upgraded.
