Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

We have as HP C180 running 10.20. I would like to upgrade to 11.x since 10.20 updates seem to dry up. Is this straight forward. Can anyone recommend a procedure as I could not find a paper on "Upgrade from 10.20 to some 11.x version".

Thanks!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

Check out the section on "Updating to 11.0". Yo might want to consider a fresh install instead.

Hi Robert,

You would be better off with a clean installation of 11.x , rather than an upgrade.

See this thread as an example:

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

Hi:

There are numerous documents in the section "Installing and Updating" here:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11.0/index.html

...and...

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11i/index.html

There are also a vast number of posts here in the Forum. Do a search with some keywords like "10.20, 11.x, install".

In general, do a cold-install. The liklihood of success is almost absolute compared to an upgrade. Plan to save key configuration files for use a templates or references to complete your 11.x customization.

Use 'vgexport'/'vgimport' with mapfiles to handle your non-vg00 volume groups. In this manner, you can simply import the volumes and not have to recreate and reload any filesystems.

Make sure that you download a current copy of the Ignite software and create a recovery tape of your 10.20 environment before you begin your installation. In this way, you have a full, safe return point should you need it.

Regards!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

I cold install is a much better way to go in my opinion. Too many thing to go wrong with the update from 10.20 to 11.x, and would you rather start with a clean and known entity?

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

Hi Robert:

I would suggest you to do a cold install of the new OS. Check this Checklist for the update to 11.0. I did a couple of updates recently and this document was very helpful:

Actually, regarding the upgrade, the best way is cold install, especially for 10.20 to 11.00, just search "upgrade", it is a hot topic, there are a lot of posts talking about it, you will find some useful details manuals as well, good luck!

Re: Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.x

Hi,
Just do cole instal for 11.0 and import all the volume groups in it and you are done.
You can restore following files from the backup.

/etc/passwd, /etc/group, /etc/rc.config.d/netconf, nfsconf,namesvrs,/sbin/init.d important scripts, crontab files , /etc.....files like services, protocols, netdaemonns, bootptab (if you have any), /etc/named.conf or boot.conf, /etc/named.data directory, and eastablish various links for files in start up directories..../sbin/rc3.d , rc2.d etc..
I think you are done then....

Before proceed, it is better to keep 2 copies of full ystem backup and make_recovery archive.....just to be on safer side.
Thanks,
