Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

Your best bet is to hook up with an authorized HP reseller that is permitted to sell remarketed parts.

That reseller will find you used parts but parts that will work on your server.

Memory guide:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/A3262-96049.pdf

I/O card upgrade guide:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/A3262-90007.pdf

Internal peripherals upgrade guide:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/A3262-90005.pdf

Memory upgrade guide:
http://docs.hp.com/hpux/pdf/A3262-90003.pdf

These guides should keep you straight in this process.

Don't spend more than $2,000-$3,000. That can get you a more modern remarketed server that ships with enough memory for oracle. Maybe a little more.

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

I just checked my maintenance contract and the D210 was upgraded using:
A3408A 128MB ECC Memory Module, D Class Servers 16.02.1998 28.02.2001 2

The others (D220 and D230)
A3564A Carte mémoire 256Mo pr serveurs catég. D
So I asked for an offer but never used the 512MB A3717A
because of the price at that time (around 5000$)

So you have enough choice...

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

The firmware for memory is to overcome the 512 MB limitation you have on a D310...
So be aware before ordering any RAM

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

The help has been very...well...helpful ;)

I have a question. What type of server would you recommend that we have in our test to be as close to possible as our production server.

Obviously we would be looking to spend considerably less but still be able to duplicate the production environment to a large extent for testing purposes.

The production envirionment is this:

Base Product: A6797B
Processor Product: A6805B
Model: rp5430 750MHz
Storage: 4 x 36GB
RAM: 2GB
External Storage: 1 HP SureDat 72 drive
OS: HP-UX 11.11
Primary Software: Oracle 8.1.7.4

What server on the low-end would you recommend to mimic this production as close as possible. I would like a machine that I can duplicate production and test patches, OS and database on before installing them in production.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

Adrian,

I would suggest looking at the rp2430/rp2470 on the used market. The rp2430 is a single cpu only, the 2470 can have two. You'll need a minimum of 1GB RAM and I would suggest a tape drive. Two internal drives, 9GB each, at least. That should set you up pretty well.

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

You will be much better off with a rp24xx series box. Reasons:

A hardware service contract, a good idea is not possible or soon will not be possible on the D350 box. We have a D380 on contract now and it costs $15,000 a year.

Thats a couple of nicely equiped rp24xx series servers going out the door on maintainence.

We actually have the exact same hardware in test and development as production. That is a bit extreme.

Pete's recommendation is an excellent middle of the road way to go.

To cost justify it, use arguments such as lower cost of ownershp. Get quotes from HP for a hardware service contract on a D350 and a rp2470. In two years lower cost of ownership will pay.

Take the D350 home and learn on it(Did that with a D320), or donate it to a charity. Its a tough box, and might be useful as an HIDS server or an internal web server.

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

Thanks Pete, Victor and all...I will leave the thread open in case any other niggling questions come up again to do with this....

But I'm very satisfied with the help. I'm now checking out the rp2430-1 server on the site.

Take care

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

Hi Adrian,
I agree with Pete on the model, and would add an L1000 on the used market..
But the main reason of this note is I went this morning to do some maintenance on one of our site and looked if I left any documentation..., AND found (Order Part Number A3262.90046, E0898) the System Memory Upgrade Manual for D class!
Here is for you page 16:
NOTE Models D250/260 and D350/360 Only:
To install and use the 256MB or 64MB modules, the Processor Dependent Code (PDC) must be revision 36.20 or later. To verify the PDC revision level, use the fv command in Boot Console Handler - I will look later to see what that means...
More important is:
1)memory must always be added as pair of SIMMS or DIMMS od same size
2)The largest memory SIMM pair must be in the lowest numbered slots, followed by the next largest pair... until all SIMMs are installed
DX50,DX60,DX70 Only:
SIMMS modules must be installed in the correct slot sequence. The first SIMM pair is installed in slot 0A and 0B etc...

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

4 Times I tried already to send this mail...
PDC Code Revision using the Boot console Handler (BCH).
Perform the following steps to use the BCH for PDC revision checking:

1. log on as root and enter reboot -r.
2. If autoboot is on, you will receive followin message:
"Process is starting autoboot process
To discontinue, press any key within 10 seconds"

At this point press any key within the 10 seconds to interrupt the boot process.
3. Then main menu is displayed. at the main Menu prompt enter in.
4. The Information Menu is displayed.
At the Information Menu prompt enter fv.

The system will respond with the current firmware revision

All the best
Victor
P.S.
I forgot:
The 512MB memory size increment (2X 256MB) is supported only on Dx70,DX80 and DX90 only (at time on tha manual :August 98). So A3408A 128MB ECC Memory Module and A3564A 256 modules are your choice and with All A3564A installed you would reach 1GB...

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

I'm in the same boat as you (Gov't - bought for a specific contract - takes an act of Congress to replace the hardware).

Mine is HP9000, K200, HP-UX 10.01, Ingres database.

Our maintenance contract (3rd party) is running $24k/yr, which seems to me like we could save a bundle by going to a newer machine (except it'd have to be able to run Ingres).

What's the price range for a server roughly equivalent to an HP 9000 K200?

Re: Upgrade from 11.00 to 11.11?

A K200 could easily be replaced by a rp5470 server. There may be those that argue.

A well configured rp5470 wth 8 GB of RAM and normal things like fiber channel cards and NIC will run around $30,000. Prices may vary depending on where you look.

This is a 64 bit only machine, so you need to make sure your applications will work in 32 bit mode in that environment.

Based on your maintenance costs, you'd pay for the server in less than 2 years of decreased costs. That would make the bean counters happy.

Though your question is related, the better way to get your answer is to make your own thread with a reference link to this one. That way you can direct the dialogue and award points in the way you see fit.
