upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

I am planning to upgrade K370 servers and visualize 3000 workstations from 11.0 to 11i. When I upgraded them from 10.20 to 11.0 I did a new install. Is that the best way to do this upgrade also? Are there any gottchas?

Re: upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

Hi Ernest:

Doing a cold-install will always provide the cleanest installation.

In general, the success of 10.20-to-11.x upgrades was problematic. Although I have not specificly done an 11.0-to-11.11 upgrade, I understand that the success rate is better.

Personally, I prefer cold-installations. It is an ideal time to reassess file system sizes, specifying new ones during the install process, and to start a fresh installed products database (IPD in /var/adm/sw/).

Regards!

Re: upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

You made the right decision to do fresh install from 10.20 to 11.0. From 11.0 to 11i, I would say it's a 50-50 split decision, either way, whether it's a fresh install or upgrade works fine. This is an excellent thread that discussed exactly the same question you've asked. Hope it helps ..

Re: upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

Hi,

The cold install option is always the best if you have the opportunity to do so. One of the best things is that you get the chance to clean up any actual rubbish you may have found, old patches etc. The filesystem sizes in HPUX 11i other actually larger and really are needed. You have two options: one upgrade but increase / and /stand using an ignite tape, or secondly do a cold install and recover your other volume groups from a vgexport that you would have already created.
I have a HPUX 11 system that requires upgrading, I am taking option 'B' with the cold install and using my vgexport file(s) to recover the other volume groups.

Re: upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

COLD install is the safest bet, plus you'll save countless hours.

You DO NEED to UPGRADE your FIRMWARE first on your K's, if you haven't already. If you are running 64bit on 11.00, then you probably have the 64 bit enabled firmware, you are running 32bit, then you probably don't have the newer firmware.

And don't forget to check the versions of e.g. MC/Serviceguard, ITO and Omniback. The 'old' versions don't run on 11i...

Re: upgrade hpux ios from 11.0 to 11i

Hi,

Go for a cold install and check which version of 11.0 is loaded on K370 ??? 64bit or 32bit.

Upgrade the firmware before installing and check whether it supports 64 bit.

Also go thro this thread....Matrix of supported os versions on servers.
