Upgrade / Install ux11.11v1 from ux11.0 - which way?

Hi, RP2470 server.
Wondering if anyone can offer some explanations/answers on this query:
Are there any hp guidelines - besides the notes in installation guide - on
1). why chose upgrade over install of op system.
2) migration paths to take when installed new op system, and then need to apply 3rd party software to the system eg. db2 database
3) why nearly everyone choses to run install op sys instead of running the upgrade process. Are there any statements anywhere from hp on this subject?

Your help/thoughts would be much appreciated.

Maria

I perfer the full install over the upgrade. That way you know you have a clean system.

I have not work directly with a full scale upgrade, but I was with some people that were doing it. (different project). From what i heard everything worked great! Then, in about a week, MQ when down and some other application, dont remember. Had something to do with the upgrade, and they were able to resolve the issue.

Sorry I cant help much more than that.

Cold install is more reliable. It works more than 99% of the time I've tried it.

Upgrad/UX's probablity of success decreases with the complexity of the applications you are runnning on it. There can be issues with filesystems being to small.

All applications that compile as part of their install (oracle etc) will have to be relinked after the upgrade/ux.

Many people like cold installs for the following reasons:
1) It can get rid of configuration issues and minor problems that have bothered you. Its a fresh start.
2)It is the way people have done it for a very long time.
3) It is less pressured. You don't have to scramble after the upgade to get all applications working. You can take your time, test thoroughly and verify the system is ready to go without a hard deadline.

Re: Upgrade / Install ux11.11v1 from ux11.0 - which way?

Hi Maria

The 11i upgrade actually works pretty well, far more reliable than the upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00.
However I'd still prefer a cold install, just for the fact that you get a nice clean system.

The main issue is obviously applications running properly after the upgrade. The vast majority of applications that run on 11.00 will have no problems running on 11i. HP has put alot of work into ensuring binary compatibilty between 11 an 11i.

HP provides a good resource for assisting in porting applications to 11i.

I'm not sure if there any documentation supporting cold install over upgrade but most people opt for the cold install because you can correct any problems that you might have encountered on your older operating system. I did attempt to perform an upgrade opposed to a cold install once and that was a choice I live to regret. The upgrade took off without any problems but when it started to compile the new kernel.. the upgrade literally came to a halt. I ended doing a cold install and recovering files that was on the vg00 from backup tape. So, I'm a fan of a cold install oppose to an upgrade.
