Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Hi,

We are currently running HP-UX 11.0 and MC/SG 11.09 in a two node cluster (running OVO).

The next release of OVO says that we need to upgrade to HP-UX 11.11 and part of that upgrade will include upgrading MC/SG (to 11.14).

What should we upgrade first,
the OS or MC/SG?
What are the best practices
for this kind of upgrade?

10 points to any good answer.
Thank you
Gino

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

You would have to apply the OS first because you should not install/run an 11.11 application on a 11.0 machine.

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

OS before application is always the safest bet.

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

I need to clarify that statement. MC/SG runs on 11.0. However, it would be better to upgrade the operating system first, then proceed with the application.

MC/SG requirements are found here
http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B3935-90055/B3935-90055.html "Compatibility Information and Installation Requirements"

So install the OS requirements first (firmware, patches, etc.) then install the application.

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Hi,

Can we upgrade the OS and MC/SG one server at a time or
can we upgrade the OS on each server separately and then upgrade the cluster software at the same time?

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Hi,

As others suggested OS first and then the application. However if you are having HP-UX 11i MCOE Media you can select Service Guard 11.14 during the installation ...

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Hi,

Remove one node from the cluster temporarily and upgrade it with the new software. Then join that node in the cluster and repeat the same procedure for the other node. By this you can reduce the downtime of the application (OVO)

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

If you have an ignite installed, do a make_tape_recovery or make_net_recovery first. Then you can restore in case the OS upgrade goes bad.

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Gino,

Take a look at the rolling upgrade procedure in the document "Managing MC-ServiceGuard". The upgrade instructions are easy to follow.

Re: Upgrade OS and MC/SG question.

Make sure your patches are up to date as well...

Review the concept of rolling upgrades in the MC/SG manual online. It offers very good examples of how this is done and limitations to take into account.

http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B3936-90065/B3936-90065.html

"Rolling upgrade is supported with any of the supported revisions of MC/ServiceGuard. You can roll forward from any previous revision to any higher revision. For example, it is possible to roll from MC/ServiceGuard version A.10.05 on HP-UX 10.10 to version A.11.12 on HP-UX 11.00."

Important Note: When installing patches from the depot, please make sure you make the following SD-UX default options are set as follows on the server where the patches will be installed:

autoselect_patches TRUE

patch_match_target TRUE

patch_filter *.*

reinstall FALSE (this is very important, if not set to false some "line in the sand" patches and old dependencies get mixed up)

SD-UX online documentation can be found at http://www.docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/B2355-90154/B2355-90154.html
