Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

The most important piece of advice is not to use update-ux: take a backup of files you want to keep (preferably two backups) then do a cold install.

You need an ignite recovery tape in case it all goes horribly wrong and an fbackup so you can restore the files you want to keep.

Hi,
I 100% agree with Mark as this will save your time and effort as most upgrades do normally fail ( personal Experience).

Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

let's here from Leon first on the rationale of using the update method. if he so decide, we should try to help as much.

i agree with the both of you that having a fresh install is much more convenient than doing a update. i did a update before just to test out and it was "hell".

Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

Hi All,

Thanks for so much helpful replies. I was still not decide use update or fresh install. But from the "secure" way, I also perfer do a fully backup on the tape and do a fresh install. I feel the Link your guys give to me very useful.

Thanks a lot

Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

It took me 5 months to sucessfully upgrade 4 systems from 10.20 to 11.0. After multiple failures, which occured about 8 hours into the upgrade, it was discovered that when the Mirroring software was updated to 11.0, it put a new version of the LVM software on the system that was unpatched. Without the patches the system disk became unbootable. The fix was install the LVM patches right after the system came up as 11.0.

Also, it took 26 - 28 hours to perform the successful upgrade. I would highly recommend a cold install of 11i and restoring your needed files from backup - much quicker (about 4 hours). This is how I did the rest of my systems.

Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

Another issue that often occurs with upgrading is that the disk needs to be expanded. So, you might want to consider adding a new disk(s) to the system, and do a cold install to that disk(s). While this adds cost, it allows you to update without destroying any of your other systems, and you could reboot from the old system if it was necessary. So you have immediate failback. Naturally, you should still first do a backup, just in case of human error.

Be sure to use the STK (software transition kit) available from HP's Web Site. Especially if you have custom developed code (application software etc...). There are many changes & gottcha's from 10.20 to 11i to consider from a programming standpoint ...

Re: Upgrade OS from HP-UX 10.20 to 11i

An upgrade path that worked well for me (if you have the root disk mirrored), is to break the mirror, then use the mirror disk to do a fresh install of HPUX 11i, then once the install is finished, you can mirror the 11i disk onto the old 10.20 disk.

This helps in several ways. If something happens to go wrong, you have a solid backout plan by just booting off the 10.20 disk and re-mirroring. Also, you can do a vgexport (using the -s and -p options!!!) of vg00 on the 10.20 disk, do a vgimport on the 11i disk after 11i is installed and mount it up on the 11i disk (in read-only mode). Then you'll have your old 10.20 disk available to bring over any config info you need.

Upgrade from 10.20 to 11.0 didn't work for me. I had to do a clean install.

Hi

I would not presonally do such an upgrade there have been mentioned problems with this and it takes a lot longer than configuring a fresh server.

please use the search box at the top of the page to search fro "upgrade" and the threads will give you lots of info other peoples experiences.
