upgrade to 11.11

Hi

We have a K 9000 series that we intend to use for testing purposes, and it's currently running HPUX 11 with a 32bit Kernel. We attempted to install 64bit Oracle 9i on it before we realized it was running a 32bit OS and obviously the linking failed miserably. This K series is old and has no support contract. Is there a way we can upgrade this to HPUX 11.11 without incurring a large expense?

Re: upgrade to 11.11

As far as I know 11.0 is a 64 bit OS, but running on older systems it will run in 32 bit mode. I am not sure for the K-systems but as you say it's now running 32 bit mode. You will probable end up with a 11i system running in 32 bit mode.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

The upgrade to 11i (or 11.11) is without fee as long as you have software support.

If you have that, you can then upgrade to 11i.

But you can check this link : http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=403349

Re: upgrade to 11.11

running "getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS" returns "32/64" leading me to believe the hardware can certainly support a 64bit OS. "getconf KERNEL_BITS" returns "32" so the Kernel is running 32bit. Any way we can get the kernel to run 64bit?

Re: upgrade to 11.11

What model K-series is this? Depending on the model it may or may not support the 64-bit version of HP-UX.

If it is a model that supports 64-bit HP-UX then you can just install the new version and go on, if you have the media, that is.

If your machine does not support the 64-bit OS then your only option is to upgrade the machine.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

Unless your K-box is a K-X50,K-X60,K-X70, or K-X80 then your only option is 32-bit. As for getting 11.11, unless you are under a current support contract, you will need to purchase the OS.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

If you are currently running in 32-bit mode, the only way to get it to run 64-bit is to reinstall the OS.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

Oracle 9i 64 bit is never going to install on a K box running 32 bit HP-UX.

Your options are to install the 32 bit Oracle 9i. Oracle 10g app server only supports 9.2.0 64 bit as the back end oracle database.

Depending on your machine model, you may be able to install a 64 bit OS on a K server. You need check the exact model against the compatabilty matrix.

A K580 will if I remember the chart(can't find it) run 32 bit or 64 bit HP-UX.

You will need more memory for 11.11(11i) to make it effective.

This box is old and you might be better off with a new A or L class server.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

The box is a K460. It has a 1gb of ram which should be plenty for a sandbox. We purchased it used for this purpose and will not be buying a support contract for it. I guess my only options are to find out why HPUX 11 was installed as 32bit, or buy a license for 11.11. Does anyone know the price for that? I can only find the price for the Enterprise edition which is about $6100.

I believe that the PDC version will effect the bitness of the OS installed. You will want to make sure that you are up to date on your PDC levels.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

1GB is not enough for 64 Bit 11.11 OS and Oracle on a sandbox.

It should be upgraded to 2 GB in my opinion.

Now our old production environment was 32 bit 11.00 1 GB RAM with Oracle 8i. That ran acceptably on a D380 Two way.

1 GB configuration is likely to be pretty slow with Oracle 9i.

Re: upgrade to 11.11

HP-UX 11i is licensed on a per processor basis. You would need to purchase the license and possibly media, which is sold separately, unless you already have 11i media. Contact your HP sales representative or go to www.software.hp.com or specifically to
http://www.software.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductInfo.do?productNumber=B9089AC.

On the web site it shows a price for the OE of $750 per processor. CD media set including applications CD, B3920EA with options UM9 and AAF $565, US LIST.
