Upgrading 712/100 from 11.0 to 11.i

I want to have my new (to me) 712/100 be upgraded to 11.i. I am not an hp-ux user currently and am trying to learn at home. I have access to media and got a free 1 processor license.

Does anyone have any input? I have no cdrom and no other hp-ux box to be an ignite server. I would prefer to upgrade VIA nfs (mounted on a linux box).

I tried to install update-ux using commands in a manual and it didn't work. What is the first step in the upgrade? Can I download a depot of update-ux online? I'm a newbie to hp-ux.

thanks for any help.

Re: Upgrading 712/100 from 11.0 to 11.i

Hi,

Go thro this link and it says that you can load only a 32 bit version of 11i on your 712 workstation.

http://www.hp.com/workstations/products/unix/operating/support_matrix/update.html

I would request you to go for a cold install by installing a CDROM drive in the server. Since the upgrade from the existing version may create lot of problems.

What is the existing OS version in your 712 work station ??

Re: Upgrading 712/100 from 11.0 to 11.i

I am currently running 11.0. If it has an internal scsi 50 pin then I can use a cdrom for the installation. Unfortunatly I don't have an external drive and the case doesn't have a bay for a cdrom.

Hi,

Yes you can install the SCSI CDROM drive after opening the machine for installation purpose on the internal 50 pin SCSI controller.

Check for the free SCSI ID and then install.

I will do that tonight. How much space is necessary for an install? The docs say 4GB. Is this true?

Hi,

No.....for HPUX 11i installation, you may not require more than 2 GB of space. I have even installed it with 1GB root disk space. It all depends upon what additional softwares you install after the installation of the OS>

Re: Upgrading 712/100 from 11.0 to 11.i

Hi Murray,

I doubt if that is a good idea unless you have lot's of memory.
From my experience for a plain HP-UX11.11 you would need 256MB to run conveniently. 128MB are said to be needed for installation.

If you do not have that much you might easily get into a range where "des_free_mem" is reached and swapper will start to deactivate processes.

You would feel short hangs then which in the worst case might last some minutes, depending on which process is deactivated (e.g. Xserver or your shell)

I do have 128mb of memory. Do you think I will still have problems?
