upgrading BIND

downloaded and compiled 8.2.3 on a secondary DNS server, when I try to convert named.boot to named.conf with the provided /usr/sbin/named-bootconf script, I get an error
Date: bad format character -s
Date: bad format character -s
Date: bad format character -s
then the system hangs until a ^C, the new named.conf file gets created, but it is empty.
any ideas?
