I currently have two D class servers running HP-UX 10.20 and M/C ServisGuard A.10.06.
I am looking to upgrade both the O/S to 11.00 and SG to A.11.01, what I would like to know is:
1, Do I have to upgrade the O/S on both machines first as SG 11.01 is not compatible with UX10.20?
2, Can I upgrade one server to the new release of the O/S and SG and still run with SG protection on the UX10.20 server?
Has anyone got an upgrade path that they have gone through in the same situation, and any known issues?
Thanks in advance
Kev

Re: Upgrading both O/S and SG
I do not use Service Guard but strongly suggest that you do a fresh install of OS and not Upgrade.
Search the forum for best methods/ plans.

Re: Upgrading both O/S and SG
First off all, I would suggest you do no upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 but do a cold install instead.
I heard of several issues during upgrade.
So the best way is to complete install a fresh system to the new situation.

Re: Upgrading both O/S and SG
It may be possible to upgrade each server at a time like this:
On the standby server,
Backup everything.
Fresh/cold install the new version of HPUX
Fresh install the new SG.
Restore the essential stuff you destroyed in the cold install.
Add it back to the cluster.
Test run the package on the standby server.
If ok, then upgrade the primary using fresh installs in the same way.

Re: Upgrading both O/S and SG
I would suggest you backup all the Data, do a fresh install of OS on the system and then install and configure SG. This would turn out to be the least problematic way in the long run. Had it been an upgrade of SG version, the general recommendation would have been to do a rolling upgrade, but since you want to upgrade the OS too, it is best to reinstall the OS freasah on the system and then install and configure SG. An upgrade of OS from 10.20 to 11.0 may land you into quite a handful of problems.
Hope this helps.

Re: Upgrading both O/S and SG
Doing this on a D-box introduces some extra challenges. Because you MC/SG is several releases old, I am guessing that your network patches are old as well. The lan devices 'btlan1', 'btlan1', ... have been changed to the more standard 'lan1', 'lan2' ... . This adds an extra wrinkle to your MC/SG upgrade. If it were me, I would halt the cluster and then start the package manually (not under SG) on hostB. I would then cold install HP-UX on HostA and MC/SG (but don't start it). I would then do the normal vgimport and start the package manually on HostA. Next load the OS and MC/SG on HostB. Finally do your nornal MC/SG configuration.
The rolling upgrade is made near impossible by the failure rate of 10.20 -> 11x upgrades AND the change in names of the lan adapters.
You might consider going to 11.11 at this time; with the latest patches it seems to be rock-solid.

SolutionAlso since you are going up to 11.x on the OS you should consider a higher SG version - I would recommend at least 11.12.
There have been several nice features added since 11.01 - for instance SG Mgr which allows an NT to manage the cluster via a GUI.
HTH,
Jeff
