upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

I'm about to upgrade a 9000/871/D370 from 32-bit to 64-bit.

There are two EISA cards installed that were used at one time, but no longer needed. Do they have to be physically removed before I upgrade? Or can the drivers and bundles be removed?

I realize that EISA is not supported under 64-bit, so when I did a "swlist -l bundle" and this appeared:

J2780BA B.11.00.01 100BT/9000 EISA

So, I did a "ioscan" and the nic is apparently "on-board":
lan 0 8/16/6 lan2 CLAIMED INTERFACE Built-in LAN

I'm "assuming" that the above driver is for the "on-board" nic, but my question, is this on-board nic supported by 64-bit since it is using the EISA driver?

Re: upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

Hi Vincent:

I've never cnsidered trying this, I always remopved the EISA cards before loading the OS. If it were me doing an upgrade, I would shutdown; remove the EISA cards; and reboot under the 32-bit OS and let eisacfg run. Then do the 64-bit upgrade. I think the extra 10 minutes or so is well worth it.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

That is my main plan, but I'm more concerned about the on-board NIC than the others. Is this NIC supported by the 64-bit drivers?

Re: upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

J2780BA is the LAN software for the A3658A 100BaseT EISA LAN adapter. That guy must go.
If you do an ioscan -fn you should see 'Built-in LAN' unless the on-board LAN has been disabled in the firmware monitor. If that is the case you should shutdown and interrupt the boot process and enable the built-in LAN.
Note that the built-in will only run 10-BaseT. If you need 100BaseT at 64-bit you will need to find a J3515A (single port HSC) or a J3516A (dual port HSC).

Re: upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

So, just to get this clear:

The port will work under 64bit if the driver is replaced, even though it is 10BASE-T.

Am I correct in that statement?

Re: upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit questions

Hi Vincent:

Yes, the built-in LAN will work in HP 11.x in either 32-bit or 64-bit but the A3658A 100BaseT EISA card will only work in 32-bit 11.x. The built-in LAN drivers will be installed when you load the OS unless you have specifically disabled the built-in LAN in the firmware monitor.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
