Upgrading to HPUX 11.11

I have a D class server running 10.20 and we are looking at upgrading to HPUX 11.11. The boot disk is 4GB and mirrored, and the file systems will need extending to accomodate the upgrade.

Does the mirror need to be broken before extending the capacity on the file systems ? Then the mirror re-established.
Does the Mirroring Software have to be upgraded under HPUX 11.11 or can the existing mirroring software under 10.20 be used ?

Re: Upgrading to HPUX 11.11

If you are updating a system containing MirrorDisk/UX and wish to
continue using that product, and you are updating to either of the
HP-UX 11i Technical OEs, you will need to re-install patch PHKL_23333
after the update. Although this patch is installed with the 11i update,
you???ll need to re-install it after the update to 11i to re-enable the product.

It is always advisable to split the mirrir before update
as a fallback.
Did you take a backup?

You should seriously consider doing a cold install rather than doing an upgrade, particularly given you will need to increase your /dev/vg00 logical volumes. There are a number of postings regarding this subject. Your best method would be to split your mirror (after exporting your other volume groups and taking a number of backups), cold install onto one disk, import your other volume groups, trash your 10.20 system on the second boot disk and re-syncing the mirror. Seeing you only have 4Gb disk(s) be careful how much space is utilised and what filesets are loaded.

Re: Upgrading to HPUX 11.11

I strongly second Mike's recommendation with respect to doing a fresh install. We've had lots of problems with driver and patch conflicts in the past when doing an upgrade. Besides, if I remember correctly, the fresh install is much faster than an upgrade since there are no migration issues.

Best bet is to do exactly what Mike suggest, i.e. split the root VG mirrors and upgrade one of the disks. That way, you have a quick backout in case you run into any issues.
