I have bought a new HP9000/A400 with UPS APC Matrix 5000. I try to connect them together and configure UPS port by SAM. the device file is /dev/tty0p1. But when finishing configuring UPS daemond doesn't start, message appears is /usr/lbin/ups_mond:ups /dev/tty0p1 could not enable.
I'm not sure about connecting serial signaling cable from ups to A400, because there are 3 port available on the back of ups that is: 1 serial comm, and 2 basic monitoring port. and i have 3 cable serial also, 2 black cable and 1 gray cable. Could you please give me a clearly guidelines about how to using cable and how to connect them together with my A400 and how to configure in the unix session and powerchute plus application.
thanks a lot for your attention and cooperation.
warm regards,
otong

Re: UPS APC and HP9000/A400
1: Check for getty entry in inittab or running on the UPS port
2: ups port is /dev/tty0p1
3: check /etc/ups_conf file
4: Check port with stty -a < /dev/tty0p1
The most common problem with UPS's is the incorrect cable.
If you are using the A1358A cable this is only an RS232 extension cable and needs to be used with the STANDARD UPS RS232 CABLE 5064-6202
Port should be marked UPS on tri-cable
0/0/4/0.0 =] /dev/tty0p0 =] CONSOLE
0/0/4/0.1 =] /dev/tty0p1 =] UPS
0/0/4/0.2 =] /dev/tty0p2 =] REMOTE / MODEM
UPS Port 1 Path 0/0/4/0.1

If you have a A3342A Remote Management card installed connect UPS serial cable to the 9-pin
connector on the Remote Management card.

SolutionI had a similar problem with our UPS. We had a black cable on ours, and in the syslog there were entries saying that it could not communicate with the device. The server also complained when I booted up or shut down that the UPS was not talking. We had it setup through sam, somehow (I didn't do that part). I went and bought the PowerChute for UNIX software from APC (they have it but it is not free; it was like $125 or something; I don't remember exactly) to fix the problem. I had to remove the UPS device from SAM (otherwise it wouldn't work), but the monitoring software works fine now and there are no more errors about not seeing the device. I don't know if sam is that fussy or if it has problems working with the UPS, but you may want to look into using the PowerChute software. I like it because I could not run diagnostic stuff from SAM and I can now. Just something you may want to look into.

Re: UPS APC and HP9000/A400
I support Mark's idea , you have to use software powershute from APC.
Because sam can only work with HP PowerTrust UPS.
Thanks
