Use tcp sockets to talk to a print server.

I have an axis 540 print server. I've assigned an IP address and a services port number to it. I am trying to write a C program to talk to this print server. I do not have aCC on my box. I'm running HPUX 10.20. The print server cannot run a client/server program on it.

Re: Use tcp sockets to talk to a print server.

Hi:

I don't see a question here so I'm going to guess. My first attempt would be to telnet to your server using port 515. That's the standard remote printing port. Look for the responses. I assume you're trying to figure out the protocol.

Rather than writing this in C I would write it in perl using the Sockets package. It has all the C equivalent functions and you can prototype much easier. In fact, it's not a bad production solution. Install one of the binary distributions from www.perl.com/CPAN. The version on 10.20 is very old.

Good luck, Clay
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Clay,
Thanks for your reply. I was asking for help and if anyone out there has done something like this in C. I considered using perl to do this, but I am intergrating into another program written in C.
