Re: Users on HP-UX 11i

Hi:

From the man pages for 'limits(5)':

"UID_MAX has an HP-UX value of 2147483647 + , which means that on all HP-UX systems the smallest unattainable value for a user or group ID is at least 2147483647. A particular system might be capable of supporting more than 2147483647 user or group IDs, in which case its file sets UID_MAX to a higher value; however, any application assuming such a higher value is not guaranteed to be portable to all HP-UX systems".

Regards!

Thats probably more uses that you've got space for .profiles in the /home filesystem.

Will that be enough for you?

Re: Users on HP-UX 11i

Configure the number of users in the kernel up to the 2GB users as you need, understanding that the maxusers may be involved in calculations of other kernel parameters.

Use sam to configure the kernel parms or edit /stand/system if you know
which parms to modify. Your system may use a fixed number of users, or may be based on a calculated value. I would modity it in sam if I were not 100% sure.

Re: Users on HP-UX 11i

Re the maximum UID, beware, however, of the lower limit for MAXQUOTAUID in :

/*
* Don't want the quota file to exceed the 32-bit offset limit, so disallow
* quotas for very large UIDs.
*/
#define MAXQUOTAUID 67000000

If you don't care about disk quotas, you don't need to worry about this.

Also beware that if you need to coexist with pre-10.20 HP-UX in terms of NFS mounts, etc.
the limit is lower, since these older releases only used 16 bits for the UID.
