I don'tthink this device is supported as a console. Proper serial consoles are available on EBAY and in most data centers.
Your rp3410 server also has a GSP/MP port. This can be set up as a network accessible console you can telnet to.

"Avoid password characters which have special meaning to the tty driver, such as # (erase) and @ (kill). You may not be able to login with these characters."

Yes thats expected behaviour - root is the super-user - it doesn't need a password to assume any other users identity via su.
