using an open relay black list service.

Hello everyone
I am looking at using a spam open relay black list service to help protect my mailserver.

Has anyone found this type of service to be helpfull?

Is there a service that is better then another?

I am looking at

Your thoughts are welcome..

Re: using an open relay black list service.

I happily employ several lists including MAPS RBL+, ORDB, DSBL, and SpamCop. Not all spam is blocked, so I will probably be adding more lists like OsiruSoft. Right now I can't say how well it works, but I think at least 60% of spam is being rejected.

Despite how unforgiving it is to the legimate users of blocked relays, I prefer using this method to reject potentially undesirable messages before they even enter our corporate messaging environment. It's brutally efficient to block by IP rather than slurp messages and scan them for unwanted content.

Why accept a message if you're going to throw it away? Why not promptly reject it and let the offending relay deal with it. It's an effective, if not annoying, way to coerce an open relay admin to respond while its mailbox fills up with double-bounce notifications.

Anyway, I must get back to work... A client is upset about being blocked... So use a whitelist as well!

I've used this on a linux based system to flag potential spam. I insert a spam id into the subject and let the clients filter on that if they wish.

Not as brutal as Jordan's solution, but it works.
