Using local workstation as an Xterminal

I have two old 715 workstations running 10.20 that I would like to use as Xterminals for connecting to various servers via CDE. I am getting the CHOOSER list of available X-servers, but when I try to connect to any of them the screen goes blank, then to a grey background and back to the CHOOSER list. Only by selecting the local workstation am I able to get a login screen. Any ideas on what the problem is or what log files to check?

Re: Using local workstation as an Xterminal

I'd suspect fonts : check /var/dt/Xerrors ? and setup a fontserver see man xfs or do a quick search on the forums.

CDE requires the dt interface series of fonts .....

Re: Using local workstation as an Xterminal

I asked a question on this already and got an answer that works.

Only thing to watch out for is connecting to the 700 series itself, you will end up resetting the Xserver and reissuing an XDMCP Indirect... I found out that pressing every key!! brings you from Xserver to text based login!... thats if you want to still connect via CDE login to the 700 series still.

I just use my 700 series as disk space (2G) for the OS, I then indirect to the server no problem.

Implement the script for further control.
It still works like a charm!

Re: Using local workstation as an Xterminal

The /var/dt/Xerrors did not report any errors and a fontserver was not required due to already having CDE running locally. The problem ended up being the machine had (2) network interfaces, with one not being connected to a network. After disabling that interface everything started working.
