Re: /var/mail/ messages

Hi Jimmy,

This is a warning message saying that the mail could not be deliveerd to theuser on the other host.

The file /var/adm/messages and /var/adm/msgbuf contains messages about file system full, mail not being able to deliver...etc

Check to see if the user name exists and the host can be resolved by the DNS

Re: /var/mail/ messages

Hi Jimmy,

This seems to be a SMTP resolving problem, check to see whether the Domain is able to resolve and also check ur ports.

Re: /var/mail/ messages

ping and nslookup hostname returned results as expected. The file /var/adm/messages doesn't exist, while /var/adm/msgbuf contains irrelevant messages about file system full from year 2000.
what do you mean by check ur ports?
i noticed /etc/mail/sendmail.cw didn't contain vuh202.in.abc.com.au and I have added that in, do you think this will help?

Re: /var/mail/ messages

It say "Relaying denied" - that means your server is not authorized to send email on behalf of the othe server...

You need to add the ip address of the server to the other ones /etc/mail/access file and remake the hash db file...

vi /etc/mail/access

x.x.x.x relay

where x.x.x.x is the ip address.. tab between....

then...

makemap hash /etc/mail/access
then stop/start sendmail

Re: /var/mail/ messages

what is the command to stop/start sendmail?
i had to create acccess file in vprpc and did what you said.
when i grepped for sendmail in vuh202:
vuh202:/etc/mail#ps -ef|grep -i sendmail
root 718 1 0 Nov 19 ? 0:00 sendmail: accepting connections
on port 2

Re: /var/mail/ messages

You can use sendmail options. but it is easier to rememebr that all kernel processes start from the /sbin/init.d directory. Just use

/sbin/init.d/sendmail stop

and

/sbin/init.d/sendmail start

Re: /var/mail/ messages

thanks, how can we test this now?

Re: /var/mail/ messages

You can use mailx (interactive message processing system) to send messages (mail) to the recepient (sms@vprpc.in.abc.com.au) that reported having problem.

usage of mailx is

mailx -s "massage test" e-mail-id

You can also read text form a file into the mail.

Or rescheduole the job that failed and reported the error.

Re: /var/mail/ messages

mailx just hung!

Re: /var/mail/ messages

It's not hung. mailx (like many Unix programs) can use data from stdin redirection, but if it is not redirected, mailx is expecting you to type your message. There is no prompt, thus it looks like mailx is not working. Just type a couple of lines of text and then type CTRL-D (which is the termination character) and mailx will send your email message.
