Vdisk and VG expantion

Hello,

I have a Vdisk with 50GB size on an EVA4000. I created a VG with this Vdisk. Now I want to expand the size of vdisk and VG. For Vdisk expansion I used EVA commandview and increase the size to 70GB. However what should I do for VG?

Re: Vdisk and VG expantion

You should have asked before you did this. LVM is not going to recognize the larger PV.
You could have added more LUN's and added these LUN's to the VG to accomplish the same thing.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Vdisk and VG expantion

LVM will not expand LV's on-line. Your only choice is to back-up the data, blow away the vg & recreate a new VG, and restore.

Re: Vdisk and VG expantion

I agree with Clay, you should ask before. The way to expand a VG is to create another vdisk, configure as a pvdisk, add to the volume group and extend your logical volumes.

Shrink a vdisk is not supported, so you cannot go back.
Por que hacerlo dificil si es posible hacerlo facil? - Why do it the hard way, when you can do it the easy way?

Re: Vdisk and VG expantion

Note that no harm has been done; no data have been lost; you simply will not be able to use the additional space.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Vdisk and VG expantion

Hi,

If your storage has some additional free space left a good option will be to allocate one more 70GB vdisk to this host, create new VG with appropriate VG parameters to accomodate additional size vdisks/disks later, copy data from old LVOLs to the LVOLs in new VG after stopping applications. Mount new LVOLs at old mount points and check starting applications. If everything is fine remove the old vdisk after 3-4 days.
