how can we recover a failed hardisk in veritas volume manager.
steps to take backup before replacing the disk.

How do you expect someone to provide step by step instructions when you don't bother to explain if this is a boot disk, a RAID-5 disk, a mirrored disk or the method of backup?

As root run;

# vxdiskadm
Remove a disk for replacement

replace the disk

# xvdiskadm
Replace a failed or removed disk

sometimes the mirror sync will not automaticly start.
# vcdctl enable
