vg00 logical volume info

Hi

The root disk of a server failed so we have reinstalled the OS. I have a good backup so I can restore all the info about vg01, 02 etc but I'd like to find out the original size of the filesystems in vg00. Anyone know where this info is stored? I also have a backup of everything that was in vg00. The info isn't critical but I would like to get the server as close as possible back to its original state.

Thanks Barbara

Barbara,

If the root disk had been mirrored you would be able to find out these sizings. In this case, there's nothing left to go on. I usually store hard copies of system info such as this for just this sort of occasion.

Also, for your other vgs - you can import them using vgimport.

Thanks Pete, I had a feeling the answer was something like that!

Re: vg00 logical volume info

If you have a make_tape_recovery tape (Ignite recovery tape), restore your root disk from that. That will create the exact same size logical volumes and file systems. You don't need to worry about manual backups or reconfiguration.

Re: vg00 logical volume info

Hi Barbara,

A make_tape_recovery tape would have been very handy to you in this situation.

Unless you saved your 'bdf' or 'vgdisplay|lvdisplay' outputs somewhere, there isn't any place where you can find it as far as my knowldege goes. /etc/lvmconf/*.conf files will have this information hidden but you will have to do some workarounds to get that information which I won't suggest.

It's not too late yet. Start saving your configuration files periodically. You can use print_manifest or sysinfo to save|view the configuration.

Re: vg00 logical volume info

Unfortunately we have no make recovery! The server is apparently just used for archive info so it wasn't deemed critical enough to ignite........how wrong they were!

Thanks anyway!

Re: vg00 logical volume info

Barbara,

Take a look on your backup for a file called manifest. I've got a couple stored away under a directories such as :-

/var/opt/ignite/recovery/2003-09-06,21:59

and

/var/opt/ignite/recovery/2003-11-18,11:42

Obviously your dates if they exist will be different.

They appear to contain the information of how the system, looked when it was first built.

They may have been created by make_tape_recovery when I backed it all up after installing.

I don't suppose you have a make_recovery for the server?

Regards,

Dave.

Dave

I don't have a recent make recovery but we have run them in the past so that manifest info is in the sys backup!

Thanks a million for that, makes my life a lot easier.

Sorry about the 5 points, I meant to give you 10 but wasn't watching what I was doing!

Cheers Barbara
