vgcfgrestore need a vgXX.conf ?

i have a question and need your verfication

i have a vg named VG01,and it has two disk PV1,PV2. pv1 and pv2 are mirrored. now pv2 has failed and i must replace it.

i have found that there is no vg01.conf file on my system .

now i want to ask,in this situation, i can run

vgcfgrestore -n vg01 pv2(new disk) successfully?

thank you!points will be given

Dear Leelan
what do u mean by vgcfgrestore?
vgcfgrestore is a command to restore once backed up the volume group by using vgcfgbackup. ok

Hi Leelangco,

No ,You should have a valid configuration backup for restoring it to the new disk.

The default location will be /etc/lvmconf/.conf

Re: vgcfgrestore need a vgXX.conf ?

i do have a vg01.conf file in the /etc/lvmconf dir. but its date is 2006-08-20. i think it may be not valid becasue it is out of date.

there may be some modifications to VG01,and someone forgot to use vgcfgbackup to make a latest vg01.conf file which can not be used by vgcfgrestore, is it right?

Re: vgcfgrestore need a vgXX.conf ?

If there were some changes made after that then it won't be a good idea to restore the configuration using that configuration file.

Can you check the timestamps on /etc/lvmtab and that conf file, however it is least likely they both are same.
Time has a wonderful way of weeding out the trivial

Re: vgcfgrestore need a vgXX.conf ?

Hi leelangco,

While we executing most of the lvm command ,system automatically take the back up of vg configuration after doing the change (eg lvcreate, lvextend)

so it wouldn't be a bad idea to restore the configuration from /etc/lvmconf/

You can compare the configuration file by running (only disk details)
Vgcfgrestore -n -l

if you are not confident ,reduce the mirror copies from the faulty pv ,reduce the vg ,and add the new pv to vg ,extend the mirror copies (refer this link http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-1236/When_Good_Disks_Go_Bad.pdf )
