vgchange error

I get the following error when I am running vgchange:

# vgchange -a y /dev/vgdev
vgchange: Warning: Couldn't attach to the volume group physical volume "/dev/dsk/c9t0d0":
The path of the physical volume refers to a device that does not
exist, or is not configured into the kernel.
vgchange: The path of the physical volume refers to a device that does not
exist, or is not configured into the kernel.
vgchange: The path of the physical volume refers to a device that does not

I then removed the /etc/lvmtab and ran vgchange -v to recreate it:

# vgscan -v
Creating "/etc/lvmtab".
vgscan: Couldn't access the list of physical volumes for volume group "/dev/vg00".
vgscan: Couldn't access the list of physical volumes for volume group "/dev/vgdev".

/dev/dsk/c2t1d0s2

/dev/vgdev
/dev/dsk/c9t0d0
/dev/dsk/c9t0d1

/dev/dsk/c9t0d3
/dev/dsk/c9t0d4
/dev/dsk/c9t0d5
/dev/dsk/c9t0d6
/dev/dsk/c9t0d7

Scan of Physical Volumes Complete.

I also tried rmsf and insf on the hardware path for the disks it's having problem with, but no success. What's going on?

Re: vgchange error

The specified path does not correspond to physical volume attached to
this volume group
vgchange: Warning: couldn't query physical volume "/dev/dsk/c9t0d7":

Re: vgchange error

Dear etc
Did you try "ioscan -fn", then "insf -e",
and then try the vgchange?
Any previous messages in /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log?

Re: vgchange error

Hi,
try with

vgreduce -l vg00 /dev/dsk/c9t0d7

Re: vgchange error

Hi,

Try doing diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c9t0d0 and see whether you can see the disktype/info.

As suggested try ioscan and insf -e.

Some SAN disks need to stop and start the agent before doing the ioscan and insf. Try that. or If you can't see any of this does its trick then sometimes a reboot mightbe required.

Re: vgchange error

etc,

Please check ioscan -fnC disk
Is the disk /dev/dsk/c9t0d7 reported and showed CLAIMED ?
What does diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c9t0d7 show
If disk exists, what does pvdisplay -v /dev/dsk/c9t0d7 show ?
Are there any messages in /var/adm/messages or /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log or OLDsyslog.log on disk failures ?
In your 2 posts there are 2 different disks mentioned - c9t0d0 and c9t0d7 - is the problem reported for all disks in vgdev VG ? Then is the path corresponding to controller c9 fine ?

Please check and revert the status.

Regards,
Ninad

Enrico - the disk is in /dev/vgdev VG and not vg00.

Re: vgchange error

I already tried all that:

1) Reboot
2) ioscan -the disk is claimed
3) disk info - nothing abnormal
4) rmsf and insf -e
5) syslog.log - nothing abnormal
6) dmesg - nothing abnormal
7) Nothing abnormal in pvdisplay, vgdisplay, lvdisplay, and so on.

Re: vgchange error

Check the path to the storage array and its configuration. If this is a SAN device, check security settings also.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: vgchange error

Hi,

What is the output of "strings /etc/lvmtab"?
Can you just do a vgexport of vgdev and than do a vgscan again.

Re: vgchange error

This disk "/dev/dsk/c9t0d0", is it a new disk, or is there any data on it?

I once created a new disk from our EVA and had a similar issue where I couldn't vgimport it in. I ended up recreating the disk and importing it in again with no problems.

Re: vgchange error

Hi,

Can you check the output of

diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c9t0d0

Let your effort be such, the very words to define it, by a layman - would sound like a "POETRY" ;)

Re: vgchange error

Hi,

until you do vgchange -a y /dev/vg01, vgdisplay won't work? Are you sure that you are looking to the correct vgs.

Can you post diskinfo, ioscan, vgchange, pvdisplay & vgdisplay as attachment.

Re: vgchange error

OK, there is definitely a problem with the disk "/dev/dsk/c9t0d0"

I cannot find any reference to it anywhere, either in ioscan or diskinfo, etc.

Well, the device file in /dev/rdsk/ does exist however.

Re: vgchange error

Correction -

ioscan -funC disk does NOT show it

ioscan -fnC disk shows it

A device file problem?

Re: vgchange error

Hi etc,

All you have is files in /dev/dsk but not in /dev/rdsk.

Now rmsf maynot work in this, all you do is either move /dev/dsk or remove all by rm /dev/dsk.

Now try ioscan -fCdisk & insf -e

Your problem will be solved.

All the best
