vgchgid fails in one direction works in the other.

vgchgid fails in one direction works in the other.

1. We are running Shadow Image operation against HP-UX volume group LUNs,
provided by HDS 9570.
2. HP-UX volume group consists of 2 disks: /dev/dsk/c41t0d1 and
/dev/dsk/c41t0d2. The S_VOL disks are: /dev/dsk/c41t10d1 and
/dev/dsk/c41t10d2.
3. After successful pair operation for both LUNS and successful splitting of
them (they are in the same CCI group of course) we are running HP-UX
command:
vgchgid /dev/rdsk/c41t10d2 /dev/rdsk/c41t10d1

The command fails with error message:
vgchgid: physical volume "/dev/rdsk/c41t10d2" and "/dev/rdsk/c41t10d1" do
not belong to the same volume group.

If we change the order of disks in command line and run:

vgchgid /dev/rdsk/c41t10d1 /dev/rdsk/c41t10d2,

the command succeeds and we can import volume group and use it.

The problem is persistent and can be easily recreated. Any ideas what the reason for the failure in one direction ?

Re: vgchgid fails in one direction works in the other.

From the information you provided I would say that something in the LVM header information is not correct. Utilities exist to dump the LVM header data and then you could take a look. As an additional step I would check you LVM patch levels to verify that you have current stuff. Hope this helps.

Try the -f option with vgchgid .
