vgexport from 11.0 to 10.20
I am looking to aquire information on exporting volume groups from HP-UX 11.0 to 10.20. Primarily is it even possible?
I have exported and imported VGs on the same OS and forward to a later version, but never backward.
Thanks,
Gary

Since you've done it from older to newer then do the same going the other way. I have exported newer volume groups onto older OS. But my purpose was to have temporary access to the data. If you plan on running that way - as a backout plan - it can work if changes were not made in the data specifically for the new release - these would have to be undone.

Re: vgexport from 11.0 to 10.20
Hi again,
I guess I can add that we have run systems in dual mode - one vg00 disk on one release and another disk on a different release. This was a test box. We could then boot from which ever operating system the client wanted and imported the vg's for their use. (we exported before shutting down from one release and then imported on boot up).
Again hope this helps....

Re: vgexport from 11.0 to 10.20
I've experienced no problems importing volume groups to previous releases so long as the everything lives within the limitations of the previous release. Data files are usually not a problem where the OS does not modify them any differently. Backward compatability is usually more of a problem with database versions or process compile versions. Your C process compiled on a 64 bit 11.0 box will certainly not work on 10.20. Database engines can be even more nasty where I have seen situations where a previous db engine versions have actually corrupted the database files. The prudent thing to do no matter what direction you go is to perform a full backup first!
