vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

Hi,

I had performed the following:

A) vgexport of the VG (except vg00) in a G40 host running OS 10.20.
B) Upgraded the OS to ver 11.00
C) Imported the VG in (A)

Everything seems OK only when I rebooted the host, it crashed.

Seeking advise on the following:
1)should there be any compatibility for vg created in OS 10.20 and imported to system running 11.00
2)why should the system crashed if there is no compatibility issue

Thanks in advance for anyone who takes time to share their experiences and solutions.

Re: vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

questions:

did you install the OS? or did you upgrade?
what did the system crash with ? panic?
what was the panic message?
does the system come up if the imported vg's are disconnected?
did you patch the new os?
My house is the bank's, my money the wife's, But my opinions belong to me, not HP!

Re: vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

Hi Burnard,

1) It is a flash installation and the CD dated Nov 1999.
2) Something strange happens which the system rebooted due to a power failure and the system is back to operation with the imported VG function normally
3) Please advise what patches are required ? I will be installing OS 11.00 to a K-class machine, should I do the same using vgexport/vgimport to retain the old data ? I worried the problem is intermittent.

Re: vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

hello,

when you install OS 11.0 you will automatically install a base set of patches for the OS.
on tp of that you should make sure that you have a support plus cd handy and install the newest set of patches from there. Make sure to choose the match what target has option.

After that you should be fine and up and running and can perform your vgimport command with no problems.

Re: vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

No HP documents indicate that VG has competibility problems between a 11.0 OS and a 10.20 OS. I think the crash was not caused by the VG problem. but for data safe a backup is nessesary before vgexport, vgimport, especially before OS upgrade .

Re: vgexport/install new OS/vgimport

Before you start the upgrade/cold-install on the K-class.
- Make a Ignite tape
- Make a fullbackup, test the backup.
- make hard-copies(printouts of /dev/vg*, bdf etc)
- Do the vgexport.
- Critical files:
? /etc/profile
? /.profile
? /etc/fstab
? /etc/hosts
? /etc/services
? /etc/bootptab
? /etc/inittab
? /etc/mail/aliases
? /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
? /etc/nsswitch.conf
? /etc/resolv.conf
? /etc/named.boot
? /etc/passwd
? /etc/group
? /etc/exports
? /etc/auto* <- automounter files
? /stand/system
? /etc/rc.config.d/*
? /.rhosts
? /etc/hosts.equiv

Recommended patches.
At least the patch PHKL_18543

Install latest Support Plus CD(Manage Patch Selection --> Critical Patches.)
Make sure you've the latest LVM/SCSI patches installed
