vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Hi,

On some older versions of HP-UX before doing a vgimport of 1.0 vg we need to create the special file for the volume group by selecting an available minor number. However with newer versions of HP-UX the above step is not required.

Can someone tell me what is the minimum HP-UX version one should have v2/v3 where these steps are NOT required.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

AFAIR this came with 11.31 2 years ago (not exactly sure what release, but IMHO it was march 2008).

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

From the notes:

vgimport
Automatically creates the volume group directory (under /dev) and the group file if they do not already exist.
This applies to 1.0 and 2.x volume groups.

...

This whitepaper is an introduction to the LVM volume groups versions 2.0 and 2.1. The 2.0 volume groups became available with the March 2008 release of HP-UX 11i v3 (11.31) and the 2.1 volume groups with the 11i v3 2008 September release. Prior to the March 2008 release, only version 1.0 volume groups were available. In this document, 2.x denotes both 2.0 and 2.1 volume groups.

Hope this helps!

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Torsten,

Any idea where the 1m man pages went in 11iv2 and above? Or specifically, where would I find the man page for vgimport?

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Hi Pete,

since everything is moved away from docs.hp.com I feel it is just missing ...

I found a new location, all is PDF only now:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodClassId=10008&contentType=SupportManual&docIndexId=64255&prodTypeId=18964&prodSeriesId=4062598

However, the pages on docs.hp.com are still there (as of today), but not up to date:

11.23:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B3921-60631/index.html

11.31:
http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-60130/index.html

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

What abt v2 ? Since v2 supports only 1.0, are the manual import steps required for all versions of v2

For v3 anything before March 08 will need these steps ?

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

I'm not aware about any changes in other releases. Before 11.31 march 2008 you need to create the directory and group file manually.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Torsten's links to docs.com have the 1m man pages. The man pages in the new BS location do NOT.

At least I don't see them.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Hi:

The ability to 'vgimport' without first creating a volume group file is only available in 11.31 and is documented here:

http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-3818/ar01s03.html

As for the "degeneration" in the presentation of HP-UX documentation, see my rant here (and please add yours therein and/or contact HP directly):

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

On the page

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&taskId=101&prodClassId=10008&contentType=SupportManual&docIndexId=64255&prodTypeId=18964&prodSeriesId=4062598

there is a PDF document

HP-UX Reference (11i v3 07/02) - 1M System Administration Commands N-Z (vol 4)

(cannot link it, but try it):

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/CoreRedirect.jsp?redirectReason=DocIndexPDF&prodSeriesId=4062598&targetPage=http%3A%2F%2Fbizsupport1.austin.hp.com%2Fbc%2Fdocs%2Fsupport%2FSupportManual%2Fc01922497%2Fc01922497.pdf

On page

638 / 692

is the feb 2007 version of vgimport man page.

IMHO this is .... (censored) ... !

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

Thanks Torsten, and my apologies to blacof for highjacking his thread for a rant.

If I had scrolled further I would have found out that some frickin' genius had decided to separate all of the V2 and V3 System Administration commands (Volume 3 and 4) rather than place them in between Volume 2 and Volume 5, where they belong.

Re: vgimport 1.0 manual steps

If I look at all the moved documents from docs.hp.com I think they are all moved to a single pool, then randomly picked and pushed into various tables. Does this makes users happy?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
