Virtual Hostname and Physical Hostname

Question, how do u find a phyical hostname for a virtual hostname? e.g. serverA is virtual hostname pointing to serverB or or serverC.

You might need to specify maybe applications in question and what you are trying to accomplish, I am getting the feeling that I am missing something in the big picture.
