vmunix: SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd062100 Failed open - st_san_safe enabled
When I try to use any backup device I get the following error in syslog.log:
vmunix: SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd062100 Failed open - st_san_safe enabled
and I cannot use the devices.
Please help me.
Thanks in advance.

Re: vmunix: SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd062100 Failed open - st_san_safe enabled
I assume you are using the "no rewind" devices? Although I havn't seen this error when attempting to use the other devices, the only devices that can be used with set_san_safe are the no rewind ones.
Also worth checking that the devices aren't locked. I would suggest putting a tape in the drive and doing "diskinfo /dev/rmt/0mn" or whatever your device is and seeing what happens.

Never preceed any demonstration with anything more predictive than "watch this"

Re: vmunix: SCSI TAPE: dev = 0xcd062100 Failed open - st_san_safe enabled
Check your patches, for instance:
Patch Name: PHKL_28217/PHKL_28216
Patch Description: s700_800 11.11/11.00 SCSI Tape (stape) cumulative
The patch has special instructions:
Special Installation Instructions:
It is recommended that the new tunable st_san_safe be
enabled (set to 1) if the system this patch is
installed on is part of a SAN tape backup solution.
If this patch is installed on a system using the
MC/ServiceGuard ATS tape sharing service, the
tuneable "st_ats_enabled" must be set back to 1
after the patch is installed for ATS to work.
Please note setting the tuneable back to 1 will
require an additional reboot.
*****
It sounds like this is enabled and you used the no rewind tape device on cd062100.
