VMWARE for HP-UX?

My question is do if it is at all possible to run a virtulised server within the unix environment something similar to VMware. I would like to be able to run the HPux10.2 server within the existing HPux11.0 dataserver in a virtual session if such a mechanism exists.

Can anyone tell me if there is a tool for this?

Regards,

Wim

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

What you need is HP's Virtual Partitions product:

It used to be freely available for download, but nowadays you have to purchase it.

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

Hi,

the virtual partitions (vPars) like mentioned above is only 1 virtualization method.

Another one is the Integrity Virtual machines.

The idea is very similar to vmware, it runs on HP-UX 11iv2 and supports 11.23 and Windows 2003 guest at this time.

As the name may suggest it is running on an Integrity server only.

There is NO way to "simulate" HP-UX 10.20 on a 11.00 system.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

You may want to check out -
HP Virtual Server Environment (VSE)

http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/cache/258348-0-0-0-121.html

The host would be 11.23 or better.
Maybe the clients can be hpux10.x?

That was a silly remark. Sorry.
Hpux 10 is PA.
VSE is Integrity.
No dice.

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

Shalom Wim,

You will find no vpar support for HP-UX 10.20 and probably not 11.00 because these OS's are no longer supported.

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

Hm, I thought he wanted to save money ;-)

I have a similar request but a bit more low key.
I would like to run HP-UX (don't really mind what release) on my comodity Intel or AMD Linux PC in a VMWare or better yet Xen domain.
I bet there isn't anything like this in the pipe, is there?
Btw, SUN is at the moment sending DVD Media Kits containing DVDs for Solaris 10 11/06 for Sparc, x86-64 and the whole Developer Suite totally free of charge and postage to you on request.
Let's see if to some this is a bit too much freedom (as in free beer?) to tolerate this waffling? ;-)

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

Gentlemen,

Thank you for your quick and clear responses. This is a no-go.

The question was related to a very old unix system witch was hidden below a desk. It has been sitting there for years and I don't even know if it is Y2K save...

So my manager has seen us perform magic by phasing out old Windows NT servers to vmware. Hence the question.

Guess we will start looking for old hardware and a quick phase out plan.

Regards and thanks,

Re: VMWARE for HP-UX?

I would prefer to have a small Integrity server (e.g. rx2660) on my desk running Integrity Virtual Machines with HP-UX 11.23, 11.31, Windows and Linux guests simultaneously.
This is near future, was posted in another thread.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.
