Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
If I understand your question correctly, you don't need a graphics card in order to get X traffic from a system. You basicaly only need to have the X11 binaries and CDE filesets installed. By default these are loaded with a standard OS installation.
You can then activate your $DISPLAY for the IP address of your PC using VNC or whatever emulation package your using.

Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
To use CDE, et al, with your PC you need a X windows emulator and among X Windows emulators Reflection X is the best, followed by Hummingbird's Exceed.
http://www.wrq.com/products/reflection/pc_unix/rx/
http://www.hummingbird.com/index.html
Also apart of the terminal emmulation family, (* I think *) but not X Windows is CITRIX. There's nothing better for efficient use of network bandwidth then CITRIX. X Windows consumes a lot of bandwidth and Citrix cuts down on this tremendously. So see if your Oracle reports can use CITRIX. (* I think they can. *)

Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
Just a quick thought, if you want an X server but don't actually require a display (for running font services etc) Xvfb is pretty good and available for HP.
Good luck!

Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
from my experience, the best choice is VNC.
Xvfb does not work very well on hpux, besides Oracle notes.
The avaiability has already been posted, so good luck with the Form Server install !

Massimo

Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
I was able to get it started without any problems at all. I tested the connection from my windows desktop using the vnc viewer. When i did this i noticed a big difference.
It started just like a CDE session, including displaying the "first time" default help menu, a folder list for the user i was logged in as; and the toolbar at the bottom, very cool.
I was so fooled by this that i clicked the "exit" button, but this just closed the toolbar. How do i get this tool bar back?
Anyway thanks again.

Re: VNC for HP-UX, need X-server for oracle reports
if it is only for Oracle reports server, Xvfb will be a good choice.
There has been many discussions about the performance. Do a search on XVFB, you will find 1000's of posts.
We are using xvfb without any problems.
NB. there is an issue about the automatic startup of the reports server. See STEVEN's posts in the database section.
If you do not do the appropriate modifications, you will unfortunately encounter this too.
hope this helps!
best regards
