Volume full - can't log in via CDE or Console - HELP
WE have had this problem before and we usually turn the key (not a good idea). I have the problem this morning and want to do it the right way - if there is one. WE have a volume (/u05) on a 10.20 K580 server that is full. The console is scrolling with volume full messages at an incredible rate. When trying to get into CDE, it takes forever and hangs. When trying to get in via straight console, I can barely see what I am doing because of the scrolling. Does anyone know how to stop the scrolling or any way to sneak into the machine so I can clean things up. Telneting doesn't work because the machine is so occupied with this problem that it doesn't seem to respond to telnet. Thanks,
Mike

Re: Volume full - can't log in via CDE or Console - HELP
Hi
my advise is to boot in a single user mode
when booting the system hit the key
after that boot and type yes in the isl
in the isl> hpux -is
after that you can free the space that you want
i will look for core and log file that you can delete .

Re: Volume full - can't log in via CDE or Console - HELP
Hmm. Two things I can think of;
1. Once you login on the console find the syslogd process and kill it. This should/may stop the messages to the console.
Its unusual though for HPUX istelf to send so many messages that it makes the console almost unusable, I think you have an application which is trying to constantly write to your full filesystem, thus generating kernel messages. If so, are all your applications hooked into /sbin/init.d startup/shutdown scripts ?
If so;
2. Login to the console and do init 2. This should run the shutdown for any apps you are running and stop the continuous messages to the console so you can then fix the space issue.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...
