Re: Volume Manager on hpux 11i

From my installing of HP-UX 11.11 on
various of our boxes I do remember that
a base set of the HP-UX port of VxVM
already is installed on a basic installation
from CD.
Actually, because we only use VxVM on our Solaris boxes but LVM on HP-UX,
I in vain tried to deselect it during installation but certain dependancies didn't let me :-(

You can see what already is installed
(probably unknowingly) on your box by issuing

/usr/sbin/swlist -l file Base-VXVM

I'm not sure about how this product can be used with regard to licensing terms on HP-UX,
but I guess it will only allow you to put
disks for rootvg and those from HP array systems under the reign of VxVM without extra license.

Re: Volume Manager on hpux 11i

if you mean "to manage volume" you can choose LVM or VxVM, these are most popular.

Some people would like the Alternate PV Link to be used to improve overall IO performance. (It's another path to our data, so we could spread the IO burden over all interfaces.) LVM does not support this configuration. Other software would have to be used to provide such a solution, e.g., Veritas Volume Manager with Dynamic Multi Pathing, EMC Powerpath, HP AutoPath, but these require the use of a VA or XP disk array. Alternate PV Links are used only in the event of an interface failure. Period.

Re: Volume Manager on hpux 11i

Just an addendum to Mathew.

As far as I know does HP support alternate PV links, but only as active - passive paths.

Connect a second path to a 2nd HBA,
extend your zoning, or let your SAN admin do this (as in our case).
Then issue another ioscan and create new device files for the alternate paths

/usr/sbin/ioscan -nfCdisk

/usr/sbin/insf -e -C disk

or insf -e -H /HW/Path/of/alt/link

ioscan -knfCdisk to check for new device names.

The alt. links can be added on the fly without interference of production.

e.g. prim path devices @ c19,
alt. path devs @ c21

vgextend vgXX $(vgdisplay -v vgXX|awk '/PV Name/{print$NF}'|sed -s /c19/c21/)

Re: Volume Manager on hpux 11i

Hi Shiva,
If you are asking for "similar to veritas volume manager on hpux 11i" then it is LVM i.e Logical Volume Manager on HPUX. It's a bundled product.

Use swlist to see the product related to LVM.
# swlist

See the link below to know more about LVM and also go thr' the attached doc.

Hope that helps.

As of my knowledge HP-UX only supports LVM & VxVM only .
